So what's the best time to check oil on a TS?

So obviously everyone knows the importance of keeping the oil level checked and topped up in the TS engines, but when is the best time to check it.

The handbook for the car says to check it '... a few minutes after the engine has been switched off.'

But I was taught to check when the engine is completely cold (i.e. in the morning when you wake up).

So which is right? I still think, logically, the latter is the best as the oil will have drained to the bottom to get a true reading of how much oil is in there.

I would say from cold overnight on a flat surface.

But generally once the oil is warm it will drop down the sump far quicker.
Think about how long it takes to drain oil out the sump when doing an oil change. Its far quicker when the engine is warm and thus oil is hot.

Both should give accurate measures.

What Diddums said

My first TS used 1Litre/800mls.

I always check the when the engine's cold... and all the oil in the engine is measurable.

Unbelievably my current 2.0TS doesn't use (burn) or leak ANY oil (must be unique).

Hot oil these days is as thin as water so just a few minutes after switch off will be fine.

I check mine at least once a week and usually a few minutes after a run and on a flat surface - I usually have to top it up slightly once a month but not by a worrying amount
