Your description does sound like big end failure although that would make the clattering noise from the big ends (duh) and I can`t see a pully tensioner making that much of a racket.
If the big ends have gone then you probably can`t drive very fast or very well and will have a constant clattering. Also a dramatic loss of power, slower rev pickup and painfull noises the higher the revs go.
If you get a recon engine then make sure the crank is re-ground, not just the bearings replaced, or the oval crank will knacker the new bearings soon enough.
After all that, it is a bit odd that it has just started after the belt change. Why wasn`t the old pully tensioner making the same noise?
Do you need to fess up here? have you let it run dry of oil or has it ever had a recon head or serious head work?
