156 TS Ticking
Hello all, this is my first post to AO, and having seen the wealth of experience here, I'm hoping someone may have had the same problem I seem to have.
I have just replaced the cambelt, tensioners, balance shaft belt, variator, water pump etc on my 156, it has done 46k but there was no evidence of any work being done, except the dealers stamp and, well, need I say more? Anyway, I have a cdrom manual, the Alfa one,( biggest load of rubbish out, that, no wonder they charge so much for servicing-10 minutes to do the job, 50 minutes finding it on the cd) and ended up doing it all by feel.
Got it all back together, started, sweet as a nut, ran lovely. After 2-3 minutes it started ticking/knocking at crankshaft frequency, sounded a bit like a valve hitting the piston as if a tappet had pumped up or the inlet timing was out. So had the rocker cover off and checked the timing using tdc and the cam locking tool I have. It was a bit out, nothing nasty, so using the adjusting screws on the inlet drive wheel got it spot on. Back together, start up, same again, after a few minutes knocking again. Took it apart, rechecked, ok, rebuild, start up then off round the block. It started again! Doesn't seem to be governed by engine speed or load, just time, which made me think about oil, although it is fully synthetic good stuff! It does vary a bit on idle but nothing out of the way and certainly it isn't stalling.
Anyone had a problem like this?
