DTI/TDC tool?

Going to change timing belt on my V6 tomorrow..but I have no idea how the DTI/TDC clock works.

How do I know how much the DTI should be pressed into the TDC?
I know I need to lock the engine with 1 cylinder at top.

Picture the tool as a screwdriver. You just wait till it reaches the highest point and stop. I get it to roughly tdc with a screwdriver then fit the dti and mark the gauge at 0 when its at tdc.
