Jamesg had a long thread on this subjetc, the trumpet is there for a good reason ,and removing it will make overall performance worse, but make improve pick up at very low revs only. It smooths the iarflow and is not to reduce the noise, that is the variator. As the trumpet is in the filter housing, not trumpets as on a carb, the length is not relevant to the rev range, the reason for shortening it or pushing it up the intake pipe is to allow it to suck air from over a greater area of the filter only.
There is a lot of placebo effect with these, but Jamesg thread should sort that out if you read it.
