Re: A policeman has had a chat to me about my driving.....
Well done, you must feel great having passed!
I passed my IAM test in January '06 in my 147. Test lasted about 90 minutes and the class 1 Police Driver sitting next to me just chatted away right thought it! Made one or two comments at the end but seemed pretty pleased with my driving! Commented on not being able to read the speedo from the passengers seat but could tell if I was suddenly slowing down because I'd crept over the speed limit!
With regards to cornering, when cornering to the right, IAM teach you to move to the near side as you approach the bend and keep more or less to the near side until you've exited the bend. When cornering to the left, you move to within a foot or so of the centre line and more or less corner in that position. If you meet an oncoming vehicle you sacrifice that position and corner closer to the kerb. The idea behind this technique is to allow you to see further round the bend so you can detect obsticles sooner. Great in theory but I never found it particulary useful and a bit akward to be honest.
I'm not sure how much you save on your insurance on average but they do say you can save up to 20%.
I think more importantly it teaches you how to use your gears, mirrors, steering and indicators properly which I'd say 95% of drivers fail to do correctly. It teaches you how to predict actions of other road users and this has saved me from a collision on several occasions. A good one here is a road user pulling out from a side road, if that person hasn't made eye contact with you, presume he/she hasn't seen you and is likely to pull out into your path. This has happened once or twice and I've predicted it and taken action that's avoided a collision.
Very very useful, we should all be doing our IAM test!
