I'd be interested to hear about this, since I've just ordered a GT JTS!! I did ask my local dealer about the engine and his comment was that they had some 'problems' with it when it first came out on the 156 a few years back, but they've been sorted now. Therefore, if you're after a nearly-new 156 I shouldn't imagine you'll have a problem. I didn't push him further, I must admit.
It seems most JTS owners are quite happy with it. I always found the JTS engine to be very "Japanese" - (meant as a compliment). Smooth, good low end torque, and not noisy, unlike the TS which is all Alfa. All in all the JTS is a step forward from the TS, also in reliability, so i would not worry about it.
thanks. Basically those that have said this to me have basically said what's posted above..."there was some problem with it". Now I'll prob be looking at 156's at 2002 latest, so may find a JTS.
Although the 2litre JTS is more powerful, the car is no quicker and fuel consumption is the same as the 2litre 16v TS in the 156. TBO can't really see the point of it except for emissions as the JTS runs lean below certain revs..which surely can't be good for the engine ??
On the test-drive in the GT, I liked the JTS a lot, coming from the 2.0TS in my 147. It pulled better, was slightly smoother, but still growled like an Alfa should when pushed up the rev-range. Roll on late July....
Many of you may have heard of complaints about the (lack of) power of the
As far as I know, Alfa until now denied any problem.
During the introduction of the Alfa GT, Alfa's Dr Guido Panizza of Fiat-GM
Powertrains told Dutch Autovisie car magazine that
Now that we have obtained more experience in the series production with the
direct injected JTS engine, we know how to work with the tighter tolerances.
In the beginning the spread in the power range between the engines was to
big. Some engines had 145HP others 160.
Now the spread has become much smaller and we "dare" to claim more power.
Besides that the engines respond beter to the throttle; you will notice that
the livelyness the "old" engine lacked can be found in the new 165HP
Yes I've read here that the early JTSs 'had a problem' ... is this true and if so what? Would be useful to know. May have read it here somewhere but my memory isn't what it used to be.
Dont know any other problem than, not so much power that was claimed and some have had problems with lambda sensors. Nowadays JTS has more power whats claimed 2.2 JTS was measured 196hp in swedish magazine.
