Balance shaft plugs

I've got the gearbox out of my 156 2.0TS to change the clutch and I've found the source of my slow oil leak. Not the crankshaft oil seal, as I had assumed, but the balance shaft plugs. The upper (rear) one is weeping a small amount and the lower (front) one more.
Is there a recommended procedure for removal of the plugs?

I can't find a procedure in eLearn and haven't found a description on the web.

My current thinking is to either screw a self tapper into it and pull with mole grips or bash a screw driver through it and lever it out. Is there a more scientific method?

Alfa workshop do them for 7.28 each, your method for removing them sounds adequate.
