Re: Looking to buy a 156

hiya m8..bought my first 156 a few months back and im fairly new to the this site..if you check out the 156 forum it will be a great help... my advice would be to ensure a full AR (or reputable AR Specialist - Indie) Service history. Check that the 36k service was undertaken and the cambelt/tensioners looked at and ideally changed...AR say 72k..most owners change around the 36k (cheaper than expensive engine work if the belt snaps). Look out for a noisy variators on start up ( a bit like a diesel noise)..if it stops after a few secs its not much of a prob..if it continues it can be quite costly ( check out variator threads). And just ask a few probbing questions of the owner..ie; what type of oil he/she is using..

good luck and all the best

Re: Looking to buy a 156

what engine size as the twin sparks have variator problems which the v6 doesnt suffer from ect
common faults ive experienced/geard of are:maf sensors failing, throttle position sensor failing, fuse panel falling off(day 2 of ownership for me),wishbones dont last long aswell as rear tie rod bushes, squeeky brakes.everything that can go wrong pretty much went wrong with mine and ive only had it 10 months

Re: Looking to buy a 156

I've had my 156 2.0TS for the best part of two years (now 5 years old). It's been the best and most reliable car I have ever owned.

The main thing to check is that it has had the cambelt changed every 36,000 miles. Listen for any noises from the suspension (although I have never had a problem with this) and don't worry if it scapes the undertray over spped bumps!

Hope you find a good one!

Thumbs Up Re: Looking to buy a 156

I got a 156 1.9 JTDm 150 BHP TI in October, and my only complaint is that I find the accelerator and break pedals a bit too close together (I'm used to it now). Other than that, I can't fault the car. In these 6 months maintenance can be resumed in checking the windscreen washer fluid and the tyre pressure. It drives very well, and is one of the most beautiful cars on the roads.
