Diesels are economical, petrols aren't. It's a heavy car for it's size so the more torque the better it drives. As with any car the more power you have the more relaxing it is. 8V diesel can easily be mapped to a reliable and still economical 150hp if you can't find a 16V. The 16v is smother through the revs, with less of the booooooost effect you get when the turbo spins up on the 8v. Look for a Lusso as it's got the nice interior and most of the toys as standard. Most missing options can be added for not a lot later. Low nose is prone to stone chips, particularly visible on darker colours. It's much nicer to drive than a comparable focus/astra/golf is you like a car that feels alive rather than engineered.

As I said, the negative points of the 8v compared to the 16v are much like the 1.6/2.0. 30% less power (I would presume revs softer than the 2.0 but stand to be corrected)
Under such logic you wouldn't buy a 1.6 and go straight to a 2.0.

Correct :-)

The 16v diesels offer much more for similar money. So go for the 16v.
Only got for the 8v if you find a near perfect one that is worth the money otherwise you'll always be wanting the one with a bit more umph.

Horses for courses and all that - after recently looking at many and buying a 147, I'd compromise the exact 8V/16V, colour, satnav blah blah decision for the best car you can find for your budget. EG, a car with NO accident damage/paintwork (look very hard for it and never buy a car in the rain), better to see minor damage than it be covered by an unknown repair, credible history ie one you can verify, do the free govt MOT check (it's free and on line) and drive the damn thing across bad roads, fast roads, test everything. It takes what seems an age to do all that but well worth it.

There are a lot of rough examples out there, but good ones are there too. For 4k+ you should find a totally mint example.
