Selespeed skipping 4th

I recently (august) bought my 147 selespeed privately and up until now it's been running brilliantly, apart from the occasional light whine in 2nd gear. On Sunday it developed a constant whine in all gears while under load, and it's started to miss 4th gear on the upshift and go straight to 5th, but changing down from 5th to 4th isn't a problem so far. It feels like it attempts 4th, it doesn't work, so it goes for 5th.

I've never had an automatic car before, let alone a selespeed so I have no experience with them. A friend has said auto's can begin to whine a lot when the clutch starts to go, could this be a possible cause?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

From my experience with a similar situation you may want to invest in a ELM cable to connect your car up to a PC and AlfaDiag or Multi ECU scan (MES) software and do a recalibration of your system.

However before doing this firstly rule out that the selespeed oil (Tutula CS Speed if you need more) is not too low. Also you will want to check that the clutch rod is set around 28 mm (again you need AlfaDiag or MES to check this).

The full thread of my issue, which sounds similar to yours (and the more detailed expert advice) is here:

As your aware the car is not an auto its a manual with a clutch and a device with changes gear for you, the actuator. As a rule if the car misses just one gear it could be the gearbox and a whine could also be the box.If the whine is sudden check the oil level in the box.A specialist can tell if its a box whine or a failing release bearing etc etc etc.
