156 Low-speed fan - Pointless ?

The resistor on my car is missing and the wires to it have been joined together by a previous owner.

This now means that when the temp nudges over 90 on the gauge the high speed fan kicks in straight away.

Personally I can't see any disadvantage to this unless it is putting strain on the low-speed relay ?

As it is it just means it gets back to sub-90 quicker

Can anyone tell me if it will do any long-term harm leaving it like this - as I would just think that the low speed fan would mean it runs hotter for longer until the full speed fan kicks in.

Are the cooling systems on these cars run to tight tolerances ? mine all works ok but it does seem to heat up quickly in even short traffic queues with the fan keeping it under control - the vast majority of other cars I've had ran at an even temp with the fan very rarely needed even in long traffic queues.

I did the same on mine, just makes a bit of extra noise really.
I'd be surprised if the fan comes on at all at this time of year to be honest.
I'd say you probably have a knackered radiator (a very common fault).

It isn't that cold outside, so the fan running isn't an issue.
The only downside of bridging the resistor is more noise.
If it still had the resistor, the fan would obviously still run, but as it would be quieter you may not notice it.

The fan should only come on while queuing in traffic while it's hot, or when the A/C is turned on (and even then only really needed while practically stationary). The low speed should suffice for all instances anyway. high speed is more of an emergency setting.

Like rockhopper said, at these temps if the fan comes on and you haven't been idling for a log time your radiator is likely disintegrated

For th sake of 20 for a good used second hand one off autolusso's eBay shop, I would get one. Make sure you get the right one, green resistor is for petrol and red is for diesels and V6's.

Probably a good time to check condition of the radiator while you're in there.

Cheers guys - the rad is new - it was about the only job the dealer I bought the car off did do

I had the waterpump done with the cambelt and fitted a new stat myself so apart from the hoses all the key bits have been recently replaced anyway.

I'm not really worried about the extra noise the full speed fan makes so guess I'll just live with it.
