Hi peeps I originally posted the below in the noobs sections to receive nothing but warm welcomes which is great, thanks for making me feel welcome. Someone suggested I post here to potentially get some answers to the questions I have before I take the plunge and buy the car I've always wanted.
I've had my eye on the GT for the last 7/8yrs, always thought they are a stunning looking car but never really been in the position to buy one.. until now.
I've searched the forums and found many answers to my questions but was hoping for a more tailored response, so:
My budget is 5k, ideally would like to spend 4k or less but would rather pay more and have something reliable and to my tastes (body colour, leather etc). For what I'm looking to spend I understand the mileage is going to be fairly high. Most I've seen are around the 90,000 - 100,000 mark with the odd one or two showing up with 60,000 - 70,000 on the clock. I'm aware that for that kind of mileage I need to make sure the cambelt and water pump have been changed. I really like the blackline but most are outside my budget unless I pick one up that's done astronomical miles, something I'm not going to do. I also really like the Q2 and have seen one or two of these come up in my price range.
This will be my only car so will be used everyday to get to and from work and socially. I'd like to keep the car for 4/5yrs and expect I will be doing around 9k per year. I'm looking at the JTD because of fuel costs and cheaper tax and insurance. I'm 29 with no, no claims as I've been off the road for a while aside from a runabout I've had for a couple of months that's still insured with Tesco but failed it's MOT so I'm scrapping it.
What I'd like to know is;
Are Alfa's really as unreliable as people say?? I will be taking great care of the car if I pick one up. Services, changes etc.
Is my budget realistic if I don't want my car off road more than it's on?
Rust, can I expect it from an Alfa that by the end it could be approaching the 15yr mark? Will it have started to show on the outer bodywork, arches, sills?
Who's the cheapest insurance company to go with in your experiences? I'm going to call Tesco and see what it costs to change my car with them.
Private/dealer sale? Extended warranty advisable?
What else should I be looking out for when viewing a GT? Anything at all would be a huge help.
A great big thanks to everyone that can help me buy the right car
