156 V6 key won't turn, car won't start

Hi all,

I've been a regular reader of the forum for 6 months since I bought my beloved 156, and had a problem which pushed me into signing up. When I tried to start my car the key got stuck in the lock and would not turn or release. After searching this site I found a thread saying you could release the key with a hidden red lever under the steering cowl, which I did. But after repeatedly trying with both it and my spare key it will not turn (at all).

Both keys still open the central locking and boot, so no issue there. The radio works so the battery isn't flat. I haven't been able to find an answer so was hoping someone can help! Obviously a major problem is I can't drive it to the Alfa specialist. I don't know what my electronic code is, if that is the problem. The car has run flawlessly until now.

I don't mean to state the obvious, but have all bases been covered?

Have you wiggled the steering wheel at the same time as turning the key?

Is it an auto? If so, is the gear selector in park?

Hi Rants, yes it is an auto and is in park. I tried wiggling the steering wheel and also adjusting the wheel position up and down. My only clue is that normally when I put my key in a couple of bits on the dash light up (mileage etc) and that isn't happening now.

So the key won't turn at all? Is the steering lock engaged?

Just trying to work out whether its a mechanical problem with the lock, or an issue with the electric switch which is operated by the barrel.....

If its a mechanical problem with the lock mechanism the easiest solution is to remove the whole mounting assembly - held on by two shear-head bolts, which can normally be loosened by careful use of a pin-punch and them a sharp chisel to free them off......

Once its off you can remove the electric switch and operate it manually, although you'll have to keep the key in close proximity to the immobiliser aerial sensor, of course.
