DIY Alloy wheel refurb

My Alloys are starting to look tatty, I am thinking about taking them off, sanding them down, then filling, spraying, laquering and putting them back.

Used to do this on old steels, any big pitfalls to DIY on alloys?

I'd use a grinder with a light sanding buff head to get the existing laquer off, then fill with isopon white, then smooth, gentle re-sand then some colour (was thinking a light steel grey) etc.

ANyone done this themselves?

If so any advice?

If you have the time and dont get bored easy, go for it, its a great feeling doing somthing like that for yourself. Not only that you have saved yourself some cash, ok you may have cursed once or twice, but how proud of yourself you can be .
Just watch for those pesky run marks though, remember lots of thin coats, not few thick ones.

My opinion...... pay someone to do it, for such little money. But like W4RDT said it would be satisfying if you do a good job.

Re: DIY Alloy wheel refurb

I did mine 6 months ago, mine were not to bad, and I got away with not filling, just rubbing down, spay paint and laquering. look good, but took me about 3 days to finish. its all the carefull masking that takes time. cost me about 35 in supplies and ended up doing them in BMW artic sliver paint, nice and bright!.
