Electronic throttle problems!!!!
I'm really getting p***ed of with my 156 2.5, seems to break down about once a week. Left it at a mates house so we could go out drinking. Came back this morning and my mate (apparently) only moved the car about 20m, moaning it had run out of petrol and said he struggled to get it that far. I knew there was still a bit in there, on investigation somethings gone wrong with the throttle. At first it was idling at 1100, and any touch part or full pressure would just make the revs bounce strangley actually dipping by about 50, not even rising. I decided to open up the platic cover on the throttle body to see if the part was moving but unfortuantley removing the cover breaks the electrical contact inside. I tried moving the gearwheels manually, wheels could move freely, closing throttle stalled engine, slightly opening it caused the engine to slow down and make some loud and worrying pops (I'm guessing ecu not being told to squirt any extra petrol to make up for extra air?), but no warning lights are being displayed (except the airbag one as usual). When getting it back to his drive, in reverse the car was slowly bouncing along, in 1st, it slowly but smoothly drove forwards.
I am fairly competent with electronics and mechanics and was wondering if anyone had any details of this system, and any quick checks i could do before getting the car recovered later, as well as any detailed information on the operation of the system as a whole to help me diagnose.
