Re: road rage goe wrong
I had a wonderful road rage experience which I would like to share. Still leaves a bitter taste in my mouth.
Approx two years ago I was driving through West Hendon on a Sunday. Was stuck in traffice creeping towards traffic lights at a crossroads. Had waited ten minutes to get through these lights when i noticed an MR2 come up on my left side (bus lane, left hand turning lane). I thought nothing of it and drove across the lights when they changed, next thing i knew the MR2 was attempting to cut in front of me. I held my lane and didn't let him in (perhaps this was my mistake). The driver somehow managed to drive alongside me and was hanging out of his window spitting on my car and screaming abuse, his girlfriend was also screaming at us (us being me and my wife) from the other side of his car. We eventually came to a stop in the near gridlock traffic and the guy jumped out of his car and proceeded to hammer with fists and feet on my car and continue shouting at me. His girlfriend joined him in this. I locked the doors and rang the police. Next thing he went back to his car and got a screw driver. Then he proceeded to gouge virtually every panel on my motor, laughing as he did it. This whole ordeal went on for a good six minutes before he eventually got back in his car and drove off in the opposite direction.
I went straight to the police station and reported the incident. I got a quote from the garage (£2,600) to repair the damage. The police weren't really interested until I threatened to go to the local paper. Eventually they sent round a SOCO and took swabs from the saliva on my car. They positively identified him from DNA and eventually arrested him. 1 year later we went to court. Guess what, the magistrates let him off! Despite having a transcript of my emergency call and the DNA evidence they said they couldn't prove it was him that actually damaged my car. This basically means that they think I damaged my car myself and that I faked the phone call. The police, the CPS and the magistrates were all completely useless. The police acted too slowly and despite the incident occurring in gridlocked traffic didn't even bother to try to find witnesses. The CPS lawyer was pathetic (I really should have represented myself). I think he said maybe a dozen words during the whole proceedings. The magistrates were just three middle aged women that 'do lunch'. They didn't have a clue. The guy who damaged my car defended himself and accused my girlfriend and I of being racist. Unbelievable...he said that we fabricated the whole thing because he was black and had a white girlfriend. Funny thing is that my wife is Chinese so makes me a bit of an inconsistent racist in that case. During the whole incident my wife and I did not utter a single word to him or even make eye contact.
The court case was six months ago and I still feel a rush of adrenalin and despair when I think of it. Basically, this means that in order to get justice I have to confront the nutter in question, or seek justice through vigilante channels. I am a complete pacifiist and can't abide violence but am seriously tempted to find my own justice in this case. I know where the guy lives. Maybe in a couple of years I will give his motor a service.
Sorry for the rant but this whole episode almost pushed me over the edge. You think you are doing the right thing by not reacting and sticking to the law but then you get shat and your face rubbed in it.
The guy was laughing when he wrecked my car and also laughing when we filed out of the court room (and I don't mean that metaphorically).
Do I win a prize for the most tedious post of 2007?
