I have just about got to the point that my winter tyres have to go back on. It's getting chilly up here in the north east of Scotland.
My summer tyres are just about done on the front but good for another year (summer) on the back. What are they? Sportmaxx RTs.
These are simply the best tyres I have ever had on any of the cars I have owned. The grip is amazing, cornering is faster, smoother and much less dramatic than anything else I have tried, and braking has to be seen to be believed. There are two chicanes on one of my favourite B roads up here that my last car could do at 60mph (most folk do them at 30-40 mph) but the GT can now go through them at 80+. My bottle goes well before the Alfa does!
Normal driving speeds (ie dry roads) can be done when it is wet with no drama. The tyres are quiet on motorways and A roads and very stable on sharp direction changes. I replace my front ARB a few months ago with another standard one, cured some of the front end sloppiness and everything got better, and I didn't think that was possible.
So what's the downside? These are summer tyres and by that I mean they last ONE summer
. The fronts are shagged after about 8k but that is what I wanted. I changed my GT from spine crunching 18s to much nicer 16s not long after I got it. Sportmaxx RTs in 18" are £150 each and the 16s are £75 so I really don't care if they wear out in a summer. £150 next spring and I'm away again.
I don't work for Dunlop or any tyre supplier, just thought that I'd let you all know a good thing when I see it. They do wear, but you will have a grin on your face while they are doing their stuff.
