I agree. I had the 1.6 before I had the 2ltr and I was very pleased with it. It's a very revvy engine, lots of power for it's size, people used to ask me if it was the 2.0 and were always surprised to hear it was "only" the 1.6. The downside is that to get the performance you have to drive in the power band between 5k - 7k rpm, which could be tiring after a bit.
The 1.6 does have the variator, but not the variable geometry inlet manifold. With a lighter front end the 1.6 is very easy to handle, and I could get between 380 & 450 miles per tank, depending on which of us was driving.
As for the 0-60 time, it is low, but I always thought it was because 2nd gear red lined at 55mph, forcing a gear change just before you get to 60, which easily added at least half a second onto the time. Apart from that, acceleration was brisk all the way up to 85-90.
I also got my 6 points in the 1.6 Twin Spark, but haven't had any in the 2.0JTS. That's because the 1.6 was alot more fun to drive.
I'd recommend it, if you see a good one.
