When it first went in to the dealer with the problem the pushrod was out of position, so when they adjusted it and there was no occurance of the problem immediately following that, they thought they had fixed it. When I came to drive the car away, it was as bad as ever. Its very frustrating when there is a problem that can only be demonstrated for a few seconds from cold!
It has since been to an alfa specialist, who also checked the pushrod adjustment, but found it ok. It was them who suggested the new clutch.
So I think I need to take it back to the dealer, suggesting this calibration - I am surprised it has not been mentioned previously, but fingers crossed that's the problem.
