Thought I would share with you my pain!
I bought my 1999 156 Selespeed 2 years ago and have always had a quirky time of things. Every 2 or 3 weeks it starts playing up, skipping from 2nd to 5th. I top up the SS oil and after a couple of days of more of the same it settles down and I have another 2 or 3 weeks of happy driving. This has been like this for almost 2 years, never any better and never any worse. So I have just lived with it. Although my wife refuses to drive it (mine all mine
Came back from holiday late on Saturday night (car had been sat in Stansted Airport car park for a week), all was well, driving down the M4. Came off at Junction 11 and that's when all hell broke lose (the wife was with me you see
). In City mode, changed from 5th, 4th, 3rd then lost drive. I pulled over, stopped, restarted, seemed OK. Selected 1st pulled away, changed to 2nd. Wooooohhh big grinding noise from the engine bay!. I stopped. Car wouldn't restart!
Recovery took us home on the back of a car loader.
Monday this week I had the car taken to SGT in Taplow, Berks.
Just had the call from the service guy. Pump failed completely (hence Saturday's problem) and actuator was badly leaking (ongoing problem for 2 years). Parts around £1200 with 5 hours of labour, total £1850 inc VAT.
I am biting the bullet and getting it all fixed. Car has 60k in the clock and is still a cracking car, for what a £3k maximum car?
I will now be keeping her for another 2 years at least. Hopefully I won't have anymore SS problem. The engine, touch wood, is sweet and the belts, tensioners etc was changed 14k miles ago.
Does anyone think the new actuator is going to be a more reliable unit than the old one (I suspect one of the first SS units was orginally fitted)?
