My selespeed just had a brain fart!
Now then, my 156 2.0TS Selespeed has been nothing but well behaved since I got it last year. It has been tenderly cared for and services, but today it had a brain fart!
It went like this.
I had been out and about all day with friends and had notched up about 90 miles or so in medium length trips from place to place. Tha car was its usually demure, well behaved self.
I dropped friends off, turning off the engine. Did the goodbyes etc. then turned the car back on. It had been off for about 5 minutes.
Anyways, stuck it in city mode, moved off at a crawl (1st) through housing estate dodging cars etc. The car then went to find 2nd and missed. I noticed that the car car wasn't in gear any longer and coasted to a halt. The gear indicator was showing N and the little selespeed warning light was flashing.
Turned off engine, waited for selespeed to power down. Turned ignition on, light flashing light, no gear selection possible.
Paniced. Tried again. Nothing.
Turning off ignition, removed the key, waited about 30 seconds - Wife said
"Thats it, we're going to sell it. I'm not driving this thing if it is going to play silly buggers"
Stuck ignition key in again, turned igntion on, everything started as normal. Selespeed light not flashing, every gear selectable with brake pressed as usual. Started car, drove home. No lurches, stoppages, missed gears etc. My confidence is however shaken.
Now for the question.
Is it likely that this was the car having a brain burp, or am I going to have to give in to my wife and get shot before it gets worse?
My nearest Alfa Garage or specialist is over 50 miles away, this is our only car, and I am not going to pay through the nose to keep it!
Any thoughts, suggestions etc. very welcome.
