Buying 147, gearbox felt loose... Is that normal?
Hi all, newbie in your forums here.
I've always loved Alfas and recently decided to finally stop using my parents car and buy my own. So I found this tidy 2001 147 1.6 nearby listed for £1200. Insurance quotes were decent so I decided to go take a look today.
Everything about the car seemed great. I did my research and knew to ask about the typical Alfa foibles i.e. had the cambelt been changed, has he kept an eye on the oil levels etc. No knocks, rattling or creaking on the test drive.
However, the reason I didn't buy it there and then was because the gearbox felt very loose. There was a lot of play and it seemed like you had to push (or pull) the gear lever very far to actually slot it into the desired gear.
Basically, I want to know if this is normal for an Alfa since I've never driven one before. I'm wondering if I'm overreacting since I've only ever driven two brand new Renault Clio's so I'm used to things being barely worn in.
My father also said the clutch felt abnormally heavy but I personally thought it was okay.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
PS: Car has done 95000 miles if that helps.
