Newbie with a new motor
Well, not exactly new, more like 9 years old, and it's my second post. But hey, who's counting?
Anyway, hellos all. I picked up a 147 today that has been owned by my cousin for a little while. Metallic black 1.6 TS with 70k on the clock, plenty of toys and drives pretty nicely but has a few issues, none of which I count as major but thought I would ask here just in case.
First up is the rather wet passenger footwell. The coolant is not dropping and as the car hasn't moved in several weeks my guess is there is a bunged up drain somewhere which the recent heavy rain has had some fun with. I found the rather excellent thread about damp footwells and will go round the car to hopefully fix the fault. My guess is the scuttle or sunroof.
Second is the passenger exterior door handle. It's broken at the front pivot so needs replacing. It doesn't look much of a job but any pointers about removing door cards will be much appreciated.
Third is the clutch. It's seems fine in action but take up is maybe a touch early for my liking and there isn't much travel from bite to engaged. I got used to it within a mile so no biggie but I thought I would ask before diving in and playing with the hydraulics.
The tracking needs doing quite badly as it's quite keen to go left.
There is a steady drone which builds with speed, but at present I am minded it is down to the utter carp cheapo tyres. A pair of Pirellis on the front will tell me if I am right or if it is a bearing. I had this before with another motor, where the budget tyres I put on the front (long story but basically I had no choice at the time) made a droning noise just like a worn bearing. Two Contis soon shut that racket up.
The gearchange is nice, light and accurate but first is a bit far over for my tastes. Is this usual or should it be a narrow gate and I have some shonky bushes?
The fuel filler doesn't lock. Can the barrel be swapped to another one to avoid having multiple keys?
Lastly, the remote doesn't. I can only open and lock the car with the key. I've seen DIY repair kits on the bay of fleas - are these decent? I can't send mine off to be looked at by zaksystems sadly as he is many miles away and I have just the one.
On the subject of keys, is it possible to get another or does it require a second mortgage at my local dealer for them to plug the computer in for 10 minutes to pair a key to a car? (It massively annoys me that dealers charge exorbitant fees for essentially someone plugging in a laptop for five minutes)
The electric windows are a bit slow. Are the motors serviceable as it looks like worn bushes to me.
Apart from all that it's pretty tidy, no nasty scrapes or dents and the interior is good if a bit dirty - a clean out today plus a vacumn shampooing sorted that out.
And it's rather a hoot to drive. Which is a bonus.
