coming into work yesterday morning, behind a VW Golf which was behind a van. I hate travelling behind vans cos you can't see nothing in front.
All of a sudden at about 45-50mph, the van braked hard. The girl in the Golf in front braked, realising she wasn't goona stop & hit the van, veered round to the right side of him into the lane of oncoming traffic. Very lucky nothing was coming or she would have been dead.
Only option for me was to go left side of the van. Saw a gap roughly, if not a little smaller than the width of the car on his left side. No hard shoulder only the ditch with a foot or so of dirt between the road & ditch. My thoughts, would rather hit the ditch than the other car.
I stopped about 2ft past him with the left side just about to hit the briars.
Lucky for me no damage.
Lucky I didn't hit him cos when I got out he was about 1" from the rear bumper of the car that stopped in front of him. There were also 2 cars in front of them in a bad way but luckily no one injured seriously.
To be honest I feared the worst. As I was braking, I was waiting for the Golf to make her move. If she went left, I was following her as I was always told, go for the ditch, rather than the car ahead or opposite lane.
Seeing as she went right, my coast was clear.
I had only just changed my front pads 10days earlier, so I was bedding them in gently. They earned their crust yesterday.
Plus the ABS was superb. I was able to steer comfortably while on full braking around the van.
I couldn't bear to have thought the worse if I smashed her.
