2.4 JTD 136 Turbo

I'm sure I'm digging up old stuff here, I've spent ages googling to no avail..

I understand that my turbo is garrett, VNT with manual boost control.

What confusing to me is how is the boost control created? On my old 1.7DTi Astravan the small pipes ran up and around the engine to the controller, which was a wastegate IHI turbo, and the vacuum came from the top of the alternator.

As far as I can see, there is just a small red pipe going from my actuator to the bottom end of the turbo. How is the vacuum created from there? Sorry for my ignorance but I've not seen a turbo set-up like this one before.

If I were to up the boost (in the future) would I need to tap in the red pipe?

If I were to upgrade for a bigger/ better turbo in the future, are there any similar turbos set up in the same way that are easier to install rather than going down the route of changing the way the boost is controlled?

Picture for reference.

That looks like a wastegated turbo, the boost pressure from the housing straight down the red pipe to the actuator, when it reaches set pressure actuator opens the wastegate to maintain or releive pressure.
Doesnt look vnt to me.

That's a Garrett TD2503V

A boost controlled VNT turbo, which is why you can't find vacuum lines going to it.

1st generation VNT, so to speak...
