95K miles on a 2004 JTD Sportwagon - Too many miles?

A mate of mine has come across a very high mileage diesel sportwagon.
The car is a modern 2.4 JTD 20v car from March 2004.
The car has 95K miles.
Otherthan the fact that the previous owner must have done 1000 miles a week(hats off to the driver!!).
Clearly the car has exceeded the warranty mileage allowance so Alfa won't cover it any longer.

Is the car worth looking at?
Obviously the cost is low although it is only a 2yr old car.

I was wondering if anyone knew if the 2.4JTD engine can handle such high miles in such a short time.

By all accounts the car was serviced every 12wks to make sure the 12000mile service was covered. And the CAM change was done ontime.

Clearly new brakes are a must even if they have been changed twice already.

Would this car be a good option with this sort of mileage?
How many more miles could you expect from it?

What would be the things to watch out for on such high mileage and such short time?

thanks in advance

The key to giving an engine a long life is frequent and high quality oil changes. Personally I like to change the oil every 8,000 miles on any car, if I wanted to goto 10 -12k I'd use a high quality oil like Castrol etc...

If it has been properly looked after then there is nothing stopping a diesel engine reaching 400k+ on the clock. The only concren you should have after that is the parts around it i.e. suspension, gearbox, turbo etc...

95K miles is nothing for a JTD engine.

1000 miles a week, and you're worried about the brakes?!

The car must have spent its life on the motorway - 100+ miles between brake applications not a problem

I remember (sadly!) when I bought a new Alfasud in 1979. There was a deal at the time that you got various bits free as part of the deal - including the first set of brake pads. I took my car in for its 24K mile service, and asked for the pads to be checked. They were changed - but they charged me! When I complained the service manager dismissively said "The free pads are only for the first change. sir" ...ME "and?"...."no-one gets 24K out of Alfasud front pads, sir". When faced with the unused "pads" voucher in the service book, and my advice that as I commuted London to Manchester and back every week he eventually back-tracked

So - apart from proving that Alfa service was as C**p in '79 as now - whats the moral? - don't worry about mileage - a well-used, well-serviced car is much better than something that only gets used to potter to the shops and does 5K miles a year.

Depends how long you want it for and how many miles you're going to do. I certainly wouldn't let 95000 miles put you off as long as the price is right, the rest of the car will essentially be 2 years old. I'm up to about 85000 on a '52 and apart from a new alternator all seems well (severe finger crossing). Bear in mind what you'll get for it when you sell it as well (if you're going to) as depreciation is always a big factor.

If the car was actually serviced every 12 wks then the engine internals will probably look almost new; It has only had two years of cold starts!

Good luck
