Well, the time has come to replace my 156 1.8TS Saloon (actually, that point came a year ago, but never mind...), and as I'm looking for something more practical and efficient, a diesel 156SW currently tops the list of possibles. To that end, I test drove the local dealer's demonstrator, a 1.9JTD Veloce, this morning.
It was the first time I've driven a Sportwagon (actually, the first time I'd riden in one at all), and generally felt that it handled pretty much spot on the same as my saloon. Power-wise, though, I was a little disappointed. Granted, I did the drive with the salesman in the passenger seat, but it didn't seem as grunty as I was expecting. When travelling on business a couple of weeks back, I ended up with a new model 1.9D Vectra - supposedly the same engine - which really surprised me with how grunty and, overall, fun it was. The rest of the car was a bit of a wobbly barge, particularly in the corners, but I did think the engine was good.
Admittedly, I suppose there's a fair bit of truth to the comment about the fastest car on the road - it's invariably one that's been hired (
), but I jumped into the SW this morning expecting a car that handled like my saloon (which it did), and could be blasted in the same way as the Vectra - but it just didn't seem that quick. Overall, I'd have to say that the car felt about as quick as my 1.8TS - which kind of makes sense, 145Bhp petrol vs 150Bhp diesel, slightly heavier estate vs saloon - but that ignores the torque...
So, was I simply not thrashing it enough (I thought I was), was I driving a "bad one", or would AOers who have them agree that the 1.9JTD (MJet) is about as quick-feeling as the 1.8TS? Any thoughts/comments/suggestions?
