I assumed it was necessary to unlock the side doors first, because if I unlock the rear hatch on it's own with the security system armed the alarm goes off.
But reading the manual it looks like it should be possible without unlocking the car first, unless my system is different and was made for so called "certain markets".
From my manual...
"The tailgate can be opened from outside the car by pressing button (A), also when the electronic alarm is engaged. If an alarm is fitted, with the opening of the tailgate, the alarm switches off volumetric protection and the tailgate control sensor, the system "bleeps" twice (with the exception of certain markets).
