Alarm not working but central locking is.

I have a 2003 156 (old exterior but facelift dash) and the central locking works fine but when locking / unlocking it does not do the usual been and indicator flash but still locks and unlocks fine. This also means that the alarm does not activate and essentially invalidates my insurance if the car is ever stolen. Where do i start to diagnose this?

Check the alarm is still there and connected, it's located under the ns wheel arch if it's the same as GT/147, they often get unplugged if they are faulty.

Has the alarm ever worked? Some imported ones never had an alarm at all.

In the history of mankind I don't think anyone has ever responded to a car alarm sounding, apart from to complain about it......

An alarm won't stop a car being stolen, whereas the immobiliser does make it an awful lot more difficult. I wouldn't worry about it

Does your alarm sound if you leave a window open and wait for the volumetric sensor to arm (30 seconds I think) and then put your arm inside the opening. I had my arming bleep silenced at N.A.D.2012 by a very kind fellow alfista as I sometimes disturbed sleeping campers when I wanted something from the car late at night. The car can now be locked/unlocked silently but the alarm works as normal. Yours may have previously been silenced for a similar reason

Just set it and open a door or boot using the key and not touching the button again ...
