What would cause occasional very high oil consumption?
I had a thread about this a while back where I thought it was me being stupid - drove to Ireland, and on getting there, found the oil at minimum, which is unusual for me.
Since then I've had two more incidents where it's been unexpectedly low. The last one was Sunday - checked the oil, cold and on the flat, full. Drove 180 miles from Plymouth to Southampton, averaging about 60mph with the air con on, and now it's nearly on the minimum.
I can probably drive on the commute for two weeks now and not have to top up - but then every so often a long, fast trip will use up a large amount.
What would cause either conditionally high oil usage, or conditionally mask the dipstick level so it appears higher than it really is?
I do know how to check the oil properly. I cleaned the exhaust up recently so can monitor that - it gets a little black but can be wiped clean, and I don't know what 'normal' is in that regard. There are no signs of HGF.
