Re: Examiner woes
Examiner the software works on win98 & xp. It installs and runs. On 2k/XP it has some *EVIL* local machine policies which stop you from browsing my computer, launching explorer, etc - I caught most of these with regmon and just reversed them. Examiner loads, but will not connect to the car with my 2 interfaces - opto isolated and non opto isolated.
I ran portmon to monitor both serial ports - for starters it does not even open or attempt to open either port.
It does not modify the MBR.
Also the Examiner interface is of a 'smart' type - it is not direct like the VAGCOM and my diag software type requires where the software on the laptop controls the protocol, timing, etc. Instead it is more like the ELM chip interface - the interface controls the timing & protocol comms to the ECU, and the software just instructs to the interface what to do rather than sending the packet to it.
It also does not require a serial mouse - it runs under windows, it sees the touchpad or nipple and uses that as a mouse. The serial port driver it attempts to load under win95/98 is for the touchscreen - this is not needed as you have a mouse running with the windows driver.
If I could get an Examiner interface, I'm sure it's possible to copy it, without that interface though the Examiner software is pointless.
