Re: Check out this post from another forum...
Mmmm... I made this decision a year ago (although with 5k to play with I had a bit more choice). My old car was an L-reg Mondeo 2.0Si which I bought for £500 in early 03 and drove with no issues whatsoever through 18 months, 12000 miles and two MOTs. I only got rid of it because my wife started taking the !!!! and calling it my 'poor man's car' (snob? Oh, yes...). I gave it to a friend who's still using it.
I would have bought a newer 'sporty' Mondeo with no qualms, but decided to look around a bit. I've always been a bit of an Italian bike nut, but swore I'd never own another Alfa after two years with a Giulietta from 84-86. Managed to drive a 156 1.8TS almost by accident and was stunned by its balance and poise.
Chose the Alfa, bought a 2.0TS despite qualms about reliability... I figured I could afford to fix it if it went wrong. So far nothing has (except the wheel bearing which was gone when I bought it). Very pleased with my £4.3k, 72k miles, 2000/W car. (That was Oct 04 ... now 80k and worth about 3-3.5k?).
I'm not sure I'd make the same decision with 2k though. The kind of 156 you're likely to pick up for that money will have 100k+ on the clock, and potentially more problems than you'd want to think about fixing or living with. And when they start going wrong, they're not easy or cheap to fix... unlike Fords.
I made the mistake last year of buying a Ducati ST4 because it was cheap... and it's an absolute money pit... wish I'd walked on.
Would I buy a 2k 156?... probably not. A 2k Mondeo?... Definitely. It might not be terribly inspirational, but it'll get you to work.
Ooooh, sorry... subject seems to have changed since I started writing this!
