Ok saw a 156 today, what I found and advice again please...
Ok, had a look at a local 1999 156 2.4 JTD diesel in silver today (I only happened upon this, as I was looking at 147's, but now been converted). The car has done 67k with alfa servicing 40k miles (average of 10k a year) and last 2 services done by a local non specialist garage. They were asking 4k which I thought was reasonable.
Then I came across these faults:- (some of which I think are typical alfa niggles, but good to check)
Road Tax end of month
Cambelt change needed
Scruff on right bumper
Rear light cracked (one on boot)
Front fog cracked
Brakes felt normal under standard driving conditions, I tested them further by doing an emergency brake, it made the usual abs clonking noises (on and off, on and off e.t.c) but what threw me was how sloppy the brake pedal felt and how every single knock was felt through the pedal, perhaps even moving it..... v strange
Under engine tray was broken or partially missing
Seal in boot was gone but not leaking
Climate control weak- I must admit to having issues using the alfa climate on first sight, even on the 147 i looked at, the blowers felt weak and only got ice cold air con at times, when hitting all the buttons (possibly my fault however, he he) Also saw a sticker inside bonnet noting that the air con was serviced in april last year.
CD Changer door was loose and not complete
Knocking from front suspension (not on normal driving, but swung it round a corner and heard a knock from the front right)
Front wing- now this was over hanging slightly over the bumper on either side, I thought this odd, so checked another 156 on the way home, which all seemed to be in line but not perfectly, which leads me to believe its one of those "alfa things"
Oil low- as with every alfa ive now seen, the oil was on the min level! and there was a note from the aa inspection done a year ago when the car was purchased that it was also on low (but serviced since)
Boot- I noticed some paint imperfections on the paint around the rear headlights, which to me indicates its been resprayed, however the alignment was correct and I know from looking at brand new alfa gt's that alfa's ability to paint a car isnt too great, is that likely to be factory?
Now all of this is clearly not right, but a lot is easily sorted. So my questions
a) should I walk away, or just accept its an alfa and make an offer based on the above
b) what should I offer?
Despite the above, it drove well, smooth power band from engine, good tyres, cd changer, nice silver colour, wood steering wheel and dash (never thought I would like wood, but LOVE it now), no warning lights, new battery and all electrics work (apart from possibility of problem with aircon above)
