This is an easy quiz.... :-)
1. What option do i take.
Might want to stay away from the Sports Pack 3 if you're on the motorway all the time. The lowered suspension can have a bit of a harsh ride but can't comment on the alternatives...
2. Whats the fuel consumption really like for the 156 V6 - dont want airy fairy mag figures. want forum figures!
I get about 250 miles from a full tank (approx £50) - this is mainly A road, dual carrigeway. I don't change gear at 3,000 RPM and nearly always drop down for an overtake - the sound of the engine is to good !!
I did get 280 recently with about 100 miles taking it easy on the motorway so am sure I'll get 300 miles if I take it really easy.
Air con seems to make a big difference.
3. How much would i expect to pay for a 2000/2001 - 50k V6
Not too sure, my '98 v6 with 52k was ~4k (private)
4. I've heard they're bullet proof as far as engine/cambelt etc goes. Is this right?
Take care of it and keep an eye on the levels - clutch, power steering and oil. I have had a lot go wrong but have put it down to the previous owner being very tolerent of broken sump guards, squeaks etc...
Cambelt and water pump are really important.
5. Is the maintenance and maintenance periods different for a V6 v 1.8?
No too sure
6. Basically tell me what the V6 is really like and also what its like on the motorway!!!!
Fun. Often catch 318 and c180 drivers staring - great sport. You can pull away, it'll rev without bother right through until 7k. If you want to take it easy, no problem. Handling has been good, hoping that new wishbone arms will stiffen it up again.
One other point is the insurance. I was amazed that, despite my previous totting-up ban (all speeding) my insurance was ~£500 fully comp. Great value considering the spec of the car.
Well, whatever your decision, make sure you do your research. If I'd been looking again, I probably would have looked to test drive early in the morning (suspension creaks) and make a list of the common faults ;
MAF (power loss around 5/6k revs)
Sump Guard (cracked - only has 4 mount points so easily dislodged)
Front Suspension (squeaks, especially in cold weather)
Water Pump replacement (can sometimes make a noise like a bike dynamo. Temp might go up. good to do at sametime as cambelt)
Always helps in getting the price down....
