Hi heres some pics of what to do if you get stuck in 4th gear or the gear lever will not centre itself properly. The gear shift plate and plastic bushes get shagged/worn out after a while and they cause the gear lever/stick in the car to become stiff and not centre itself properly. This results in difficulty in selecting your gears(especially 4th gear)
I used a car hoist to do this and had all 4 wheels clean off the ground.Makes it easier to adjust the gearbox and select gears when checking your work.
Put the car in neutrel.
You need to take out the old gear shifter plate and gear shift rod that sit ontop of the gearbox. The rod is bolted onto the plate with a long bolt and a size 17 nut.
Take out the battery, then take out the battery tray.
Disconect/unclip the 2 gear shift cables off of their nipples/ball joints.
Slide off the 2 retaining clips that hold the cables in place on the metal plate.
Take off the gear cables and push them to one side.
Unscrew the 3 13mm bolts that hold the gear plate onto the top of the gearbox.
Then pull the plate off the shift rod that goes down into the gear box itself.
Install the new gear plate and hook the gear selector rod back onto the shift rod.Be carefull and make sure that you fully hook the 2 up together.
Put the 3 13mm bolts back through the new gear plate and loosly fit them.Once you have done that, push on the gear selector and make sure that it makes the gear shift rod move up and down in the gear box.You will be able to select 1st gear doing this.Once you are happy that the new plate and gear selector is getting 1st gear put it back into neutrel and torque down the 3 13mm bolts that are holding the plate in place.
Then slot the gear cables back into the metal plate and put the retaining clips back on to hold them firmly in place.
Get some grease and grease the 2 nipples, ball joints that the gear shift cables clip back onto.
Then clip the 2 gear cables back onto their nipples/ball joints and thats it,your finnished.
You will now have a perfect smooth gear box and gear selection will be very free and smooth.I just did mine today and took some pics to show you all.Anybody that is handy with a socket set and a set of spanners can do this. All its costs is the price of the gear selector plate and rod(about 15 quid)
I have a super smooth gear box and gear stick now. This combined with the short shifter kit is great.Very short, fast and effortless gear changes now.
Enjoy the pics.
Oh I also installed the hi-flow 200 cell cat and 65mm middle silencer tonight. The cars now pulls even harder now thanks to a bit of added back pressure from the hi flow cat.Pulls like a demon, throttle response is much sharper now and the car is not spitting that much flame out of the exhaust now.
I went out in the car with a chap called Emmet and thrashed the car around Rathnew in County Wicklow in the snow tonight.Oh what a joy to be driving that car now.A bit quieter now aswell but even more of an animal of a car to drive. The Race Logic traction control came into its own tonight on wet, snowy and icey roads.Kept the car stable and under control while flying around the country back roads.
