Stuck in 4th gear

Was just wondering if anybody has had the same/similar problems and could help me out? I Have a 2001 147 T.S. Lusso 1.6 and has only done 26,000 miles.

Basically when driving i get stuck in 4th gear but ususally frees itself after 10 minutes of trying, no matter how many times I try to get it out of 4th gear. Once i get it back out of 4th and begin driving again it gets stuck in 4th gear more frequently. Once the problems has occured it usually resolves its self for a couple of days then re-appears again?

Does anyone have any idea of what the problem is and how much its gonna cost???

It could be related to this if the lever is difficult to move.. (stiff gear knob!)

or here (Gearbox/Clutch problem...? Any advice....?)

and if it is it's quite common and easy (cheap) to fix

I have the exact same thing, I was kinda planning on waiting till my 36K service to have it sorted but it is getting worse, getting worse to the point that I had to pull over the other night because I couldn't get out of 4th.

Much waggling too and fro seemed to free it up but I think I'm gonna have to get mine in sooner than i'd hoped (still got 5k to go til service).

Damn those bushes.

Thanx for the info on the bushes alfagj, my mechanic seems to have come up with the same conclusion. he reckons its probably not worth doing until it gets worse as he has had the car for the last couple of days and he had no problems with it at all. It is a shame that 147's have loads of problems with the gear box as its a wicked drive and a real head turner!!!!

The standard 147 gearbox will handle 300+bhp with no problems,the problem is the gear stick housing and bushing and the plastic bushings on the gear selector rod that sits ontop of the gearbox.They wear out and need to be replaced.But dont worry about the gearbox itself.I have been pushing 300bhp through it and it has coped very well with it.
