Hi guys and girls
I have a bit of a dilema, I run a mazda 323f gsi (great little reliable cage) but its soooo reliable and boring i cant stand it any more. Sooo ive been looking for a new cage and think the 156 2.4 sportwagon is very pretty, i would be looking for the 175 BHP model
But (and its a big but)
Previously ive owned (and adored) a 146 2.0 TS to be honest i could have looked after it better but i could have been a lot worse to it
but it bit me where it hurt (right in the wallet) many times and only once was engine failure which incidently was just before i said stuff that and bought the mazda for its reliablness, anyway i had problems with the exhaust, brakes, clutch electrics and all sorts of other things, fortunately, for the Alfa every time i paid through the nose to have it fixed i would get in the damn thing thrash it and forgive it instantly as it sounded and went so well.
My wife is dead against me buying another one but ive gotten over hurdles like that before so think i can pull that one off again
well at least once more.....
So id be looking at a pretty new one maybe only a year old or two old with no more than 40k on the clock with a FDSH. i often do long trip's of up to 700 miles return and want the looks power noise feel and soul of an Alfa again but cant quite convince myself that it really is a good idea, Im in a better position now to not miss servicing and have learnt my lesson on not keeping the oil topped up with top quality oil an a weekly basis.
All motors can have problems (except mazdas as they have sold thier soul to guartantee reliability) but im not yet convinced that spending 10 or 15k on a new cage with an alfa badge on the front is a good idea.
to bluff the wife who knows nothing about cars im going to show the wife the log book which will say Fiat in it somewhere and that should sort her out failing that i can glue a Ford badge on the front of it (seems like a great plan)
So are they attaining normal cage like reliability if properly looked after now or is my wallet in mortal danger of being forever empty at the expence of a large grin again, like i said specifically the 2.4 but possably the 1.9 if they get lots of good comments in here, Ive not driven either yet but plan to test driving them back to back pretty soon, Petrols though wont get a look in as my mileage can be highish sometimes and i love the power delivery of the deisel's all the power without having to work to hard for it.
any advice would be welcome
