156 1.8 Veloce

156 Rear Suspension

Hello All,
First time poster - great site.
I was hoping for a bit of advice before I go to the garage. I've got a 2001 156 1.8 Veloce which has started to make a knocking noise round about the passenger side rear wheel when going over anything bigger than medium sized bumps.
The suspension's pretty stiff already, but this is a definite knocking noise as opposed to the usual thuds.
Anyone had the same thing happen? More to the point, how painful was it to get sorted out?

Re: 156 Rear Suspension

Its most likely a worn out bush or worn Trailing arm. (or more then one trailing arm)

156 suspension parts are not very expensive, which is a good thing since they need changing quite often

Rear Bushes are around 10. Trailings arms around 40 (Danish prices) UK prices is probably a little lower.

Labour costs sholdn't be more then -2 hrs depending on what the problem is.

Re: 156 Rear Suspension

As PK said it is probably the bushes.
But if it is a RHD UK car another posibility is that the exhaust joint to the rearbox has worked loose and the pipe is knocking on the rear crossmember.

Re: 156 Rear Suspension

could possibly also be a loose bolt securing the anti-roll bar?

The noise (from the drivers side rear wheel in my case) got progressively louder over a journey of approx 30 miles.

I had that problem recently - looks like the garage hadn't done it up

Re: 156 Rear Suspension

UK price for a rear trailing arm at an independent is about 25 or so. Allow 1.5 hours for labour. VERY common problem on the 156. If still under Alfa UK warranty you should be able to get them to replace it FOC. If not, time to find a good indy.
