156 Selespeed

Hmmm 156 Selespeed warning light!!!

I have a 4 year old 156 Selespeed SW. I have had it just over 18months. It's not been the best of relationships although I do love this car. after 6 months of ownership and only 28k on the clock there was a major mechanical failer and the engine needed replacing.

I have heared a lot of bad things about Alfa dealers/service centres but my experiance was pretty good. Even though the car was more than 3 years old and was over due on a service, Alfa Romeo agreed tot pay for half the cost of getting the engine replaced. This was mainly due to the very low millage.

Anyway on to my current problem. As a rule I tend to drive my car in the fully auto mode other than when I'm ragging it about a bit. The other day I knocked out of city to pass a slow moving vehicle(i find the "kick down" is not quiet as good as when driving a proper auto) and continued on my way(with "City" of) now as i was approaching the motorway junction I realesed the accelerator to slow slightly. as the Revs started dropping of The gearbox warning light came on and the number 5(as I was in 5th gear) started flashing. The revs continued to drop of but even when the revs were way down low it still did not engage a lower gear.

I City mode everything appears to be fine for the moment anyway but when city is off and the car is warm the problem re-appears.

Can anyone shed any light on what this problem may be.

Re: 156 Selespeed warning light!!!

I think this is a known issue, but I can't remember what it is!

A trip to an experienced specialist with an Examiner diag system should point to the problem.

If it is changing gears ok in "City" mode the Actuator, pump & gearbox are probably fine. That just leaves the Selespeed ECU, gear selector lever switches and associated wiring.
