Width will detriment fuel consumption (by about 10 or 20% depending on width) and perhaps take the edge off acceleration (more contact patch equals more friction) but will not affect damage to the rims caused by potholes. Low profile tyres, especially if you don't keep on top of preassures, could give you problems with potholes.
There must be threads about this so do a search as it must have come up before. You must not assume that by going bigger and wider you will have a bigger contact patch. It mostly changes shape and sometimes a bigger rim/tyre will have less contact patch than a smaller rim/tyre. Then you have to consider that most low profile tyres are made with softer, grippier rubber so you don't need such a big contact patch... you can understand why F1 this past couple of seasons has been as much to do about tyres as it has the cars/drivers.
