New Owner - almost!

Hi all. Firstly, a great site, very current and very useful.

I'm picking up my first Alfa in a week or so (2001 147 1.6 Lusso 5 Dr, 17,000 miles, metallic blue) and really looking forward to it. Boy they are fantastic looking cars!!

Been reading avidly about all the little quirks associated with these beauties and one that stands out a lot is the.......wait for it..........................the cambelt issue.

Just some advice for me would be great. Since mine is 4 years old but only one previous owner and just 17,000 on the clock, should I have any concern about the belt at this stage or have I just been scared off by the few horror stories on the site?

Look forward to hearing your comments.

Re: New Owner - almost!

Alfa themselves state that 3 years is the determining age, irrespective of mileage, for timing belt replacement. I bought my 3 year old JTS with 35k miles and had the timing belts and variator replaced without thinking twice about it. Just as well to have the auxiliaries belt done also.
I have read that the 159's are going to replace the belt with a chain drive ?

Re: New Owner - almost!

It's going to need done sometime soon so if you can afford to do it now then I would - for peace of mind if nothing else.

I don't know if the 1.6 is less prone to this problem than the 2.0 but if it goes it's a big bill - as I'm sure you're aware.

It is recommended to change at 3 years or 36k miles although Alfa UK have different ideas and unfortunately many people are paying the price.

Otherwise the TS is a great engine - it has a feel and sound you don't get from many 4 pots these days. It has some odd problems but they are already covered on here somewhere - variator, timing belt, air flow meter

156 2.5 V6 24v, Cosmos Blue Metallic, Tan Leather, 17 GTA's, 225/45 Michelin PS2's, Full Zender body kit, GTA Headlights, Eibach springs, Koni FSD's, Eibach Anti-roll bars, Ferrari 360 Brembo calipers, DS2500 pads, Squadra ECU, 45mm Intake Runners, Carbon Intake, Dan & Wizard exhaust

156 2.5 V6 Qsystem, Red + Red Leather, Bilstein dampers, DS2500 pads...soon Brembo calipers, 17" GTV Teles

Re: New Owner - almost!

Good advice above

Cambelts, tensioners and auxillary belts...... get them changed at 3 years or 36k miles - whichever comes first..... is the Local AR wisdom

And while they've got it in pieces replace the variator

Mines nearly 3 years old with 25k on the clock.... booking it in soon to have it all done

Then enjoy what is a fabulous car without worrying
