The 1.6 litre 147 gearbox is good for about 310-320bhp.After that its just a case of when and not if it blows up/craps itself.
I destroyed 2nd gear on my 147 turbo last year.Basicly I droped from 4th down to 3rd then accelerated hard in 3rd to overtake a slower car and then dropped down to 2nd gear when braking for a sharp bend in the road
Problem was that the car reved to nearly 7000 revs when I droped down to 2nd and it stripped 2nd gear.
From this experience,I would suspect that the person who you loaned the car to was having a bit of fun(a bit too much fun by the sounds of it
) in it in 1st and 2nd gear.
If the gear stick itself is very loose and has alot of play in it then you will need to get the gear stick housing replaced as the bushing and housing is shagged.
Heres a pic of a new gearstick housing that I had to buy in order to get a custom short shifter kit made for my car.
Hope this sheds some light on the problem for you.
