Yes your main thing is to hold the shaft as still as poss you could really do a a second pair of hands can you get a helper for 10 mins from some where? Or put the wheel back on one use it against yourself as a stop ? It would have been easier to take the shaft off and do it in a vice but I know from experience how difficult it is to get the hub nut off. If you plan on doing this again over time it is worth investing in a electric hammer gun this is so much help for all sorts of stubborn bolts if you are working on your own .?
I really don't know what else to suggest I'm afraid.
The only other thing would be to replace the bottom arm to hold everything just with the bolt through the arm and see if you can get it started then remove it again
