OMG Moment, waterpump just holding on.
I've been a long time forum lurker since getting my first Alfa, a 156TS, three years ago. It's just hit 113,000 miles, 36,00 after the last cambelt change. I was intending to book it in to the local Fiat and Alfa specialists in Bury St Edmunds who did it last time (great service) last week, when I noticed that it was losing coolant when standing - it had been parked for a couple of days at work - I noticed a puddle under the car. There was a drip of coolant on the underside of the crank case close to the power steering pump. Checked in the Cambelt Case and it was rather wet, and I started to feel a bit uneasy about driving the 40 miles to the garage. A slight whining beginning to sound like a tired power steering pump was just becoming audible. Overnight it lost about half the reservoir full of coolant.
A couple of texts from buddies saying "do it!" later, and encouraged by all the information I've gleaned here, I'd ordered the tools and parts and set about the cambelt and waterpump service myself. No great difficulties getting it all apart though I was surprised how much effort it took to loosen the four bolts on the crankshaft pulley. The cambelt seemed a little off centre. Once I'd loosened the tensioner I saw why - the water pump pulley had maybe 5mm of play and the water leak was through the bearings. Took it out and found it to be in a really bad way. I'm amazed it survived the drive home. So glad I didn't head to the garage or I might have arrived on a tow truck. The back of the impeller is worn to a flattish dome shape.
Any special tips? I'm intending to flush the cooling system as It will have finely ground ceramic from the back of the impeller which was rubbing on the mounting.
Thankfully everything else looks good. No visible wear to the cams or followers, oil is nice and clean.
One little thing - the bent metal clip holding the brake hose tidy against the inside of the wheel arch is well rusted. I cant find these on line - not sure if I'm searching with the correct terms?
