On a 156 the cam cover is "plastic", and not prone to cracking, whereas the gasket is a "rubber" compound which does harden with time. I'd say that it would take only a couple of minutes to remove the outer (silver) cover nad then the black cam cover to check the situation. The "rubber" gasket doesn't need to be relaced each time its disturbed, but if you have a leak I'd get one to replace the existing one.
On the earlier (145/6, 155 / GTV ) aluminium top engines the bottom section of the cam cover was prone to cracking at the corners if overtightened, but i haven't seen this happen with the "plastic" 156 ones.
You only need a torx socket IIRC to undo both the top cover and the cam cover.
