Newbie needs help!

Hi, I'm a new Alfa owner after 20+ years of Fords....anyway, I now have a 53 plate 147 2.0TS and I love it! Except, the Motor Control light comes on for a couple of days then goes off again for a few days. It seems hesitant at low revs, has an intermittent misfire and then rockets away at about 3k. When its running fine its a lovely car and will return 50+ at a steady 40mph. I'm sure its running rich as the tailpipe is very sooty. It averages about 32mpg.
Having searched the forums I can see that my problems aren't unique(!) but I'm struggling to find an idiots guide that will tell me what to do step by step so I can eliminate the obvious things first. I've read about dodgy MAFs and blocked cats but I'm not much of a mechanic. However, I would love to have a go before I give up and take it to a specialist. Can anyone point me in the right direction, please?
Thanks in advance for your help.

my bet would be the maf unplug it and see if it runs better... it might feel lumpy at idle, but step on it and see if it gets through all the rev range. if it's better, then you got a faulty or just dirty maf.
