MPG with aircon
I've had cars with aircon for quite a while now, and I always expect to get slightly worse mpg when using it. In fact on my Fiat Coupe, I can feel the drag when the compressor clutch engages, so it stands to reason that the mpg will drop a bit
However, when reading through the owner's manual for the GT, I was surprised to read that it can affect consumption by "up to 20%"
At first I thought that this was just a case of Alfa covering themselves by thinking of a number and doubling it, but on Friday, I suffered an appalling reduction in mpg
On the 40-ish mile run into work (mix of A road, DC, motorway and urban), I managed a fairly respectable 51mpg (on the trip computer). Friday was very sunny, so the aircon was on all the way home - identical journey, very similar speeds - 43mpg
Is this really the case? Think I'll open a window next time....
BTW, seeing as I haven't got through my first full tank yet, how accurate is the onboard mpg calculator?
