Comedy of errors
So I'm good with my oil levels (10W60) on my JTS, and it's never been below half in my ownership, but...
First off, I put BG44K in my fuel as preventative maintenance. Then I had to go on a 650 mile trip. Beforehand, I checked the oil, but I did it when slightly warm. 200ml over max, maybe, nothing to worry about.
Then I did my trip, checked again, cold this time, albeit also on a very mild slope and slight bank. Nothing on the dipstick! Panic. Put just under a litre in, measured it again, 200ml below max.
I'm guessing that the BG44K thinned out the oil and some more than usual burnt off - either that or the steady 75mph on boring Irish motorways. I'm also guessing that it was therefore only low for a short period - no in-car warning of doom, as you would hope, and no other symptoms.
I'm going to buy some 10W40 as a topup and keep a close eye on it, but what are my real chances of trouble? Really worth getting the big ends inspected on return? Ta.
