I need thermostat help!!!
Having just spend my weekend wrestling what is the joy of changing a thermostat on a 2.4 JTD 156 10V, including the fun of having to remove the EGR heat exchanger just to get it off, I think my new thermostat is faulty!
My old faulty thermostat opened too early, meaning the temp sat at 70C unless you were in traffic with a marked effected on the fuel consumption, with the warmer weather it had creep up to a sold 75-80 whilst driving and the fuel economy improved.
After some hassle with being sent the wrong one initially I finally received a new thermostat for £75 +P&P made by First Line.
I finished fitting it today however when I ran the engine for the first time I found the thermostat opened at ~105C, I came to this conclusion by watching the temperature gauge in the car and feeling the hose from the thermostat to the radiator. I can't use the fans turning on to confirm the temperature as my first fan is currently disconnected as it runs all the time, ( I think this is something to do with a faulty air con pressure sensor, but I've not solve it yet) and the second one never came on. (What temp should the second one come on at?
Now I really really need to know what's going on, as the new thermostat came with a new temperature sender could this be faulty? Or is the thermostat really opening far too late?
As my car is just pre OBD standards I can't read anything from the ECU with my FiatECUscan SW and my bluetooth OBD dongle doesn't pick up a meaningful coolant temp either.
I don't want to risk damaging the engine by running it too hot, and a bill for a new head gasket couldn't come at a worst time right now.
Has anyone experience anything similar to this? Is my new thermostat faulty?
Any help most appreciated!
